Klarna is best known as a "buy now, pay later" service, but its Sofort product enables instant bank-authenticated transfers — making it one of the fastest ways to move money from your German bank account to a crypto exchange with no card required.
Klarna is a Swedish fintech company that has become one of Europe's most recognised payment brands. In Germany, Klarna is particularly popular through its Sofort (formerly "Sofortüberweisung") product, which enables real-time bank transfers authenticated via your online banking credentials. For crypto buyers, it is Sofort that matters most — not Klarna's BNPL (buy now, pay later) functionality.
There is an important distinction to make: Klarna's buy now, pay later service (where you pay in instalments) is generally not available for cryptocurrency purchases. Crypto exchanges do not allow deferred payment for crypto because the asset can immediately be withdrawn and cannot be clawed back like a physical product. What crypto exchanges do support is Klarna Sofort — the instant bank transfer product. This operates identically to Giropay: you select your bank, log in to online banking, and authorise a transfer that settles instantly.
Klarna Sofort is supported by all major German banks with online banking access, including Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Sparkasse, Volksbank, Postbank, ING Germany, DKB, Comdirect, N26, and Targobank. The service works by temporarily accessing your online banking account to initiate a transfer — you provide your banking login credentials on Klarna's secured platform, not on the exchange itself.
Klarna Sofort has historically attracted some criticism from German consumer organisations (Verbraucherzentralen) because it requires you to enter your online banking credentials on a third-party platform. While Klarna is a regulated payment institution under EU PSD2, many German security experts and banks advise caution. Deutsche Bank and ING Germany have at various times discouraged the practice. If you're uncomfortable sharing banking credentials with a third party, consider using SEPA direct transfer or Giropay instead — both achieve similar results without credential sharing.
Klarna Sofort typically incurs a processing fee of 1–2% on crypto exchanges, compared to 0% for SEPA. However, the instant settlement makes it valuable when market timing matters. Transaction limits vary by bank — typically €5,000–€25,000 per transaction. The exchange will also apply its own limits based on your KYC verification level.
Create your account and complete KYC verification with your German ID. Ensure you have active online banking access with your German bank (Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank, ING, DKB, Volksbank etc.).

Choose your German bank from the list. Enter your online banking login and authorise the payment using your bank's TAN method (app-TAN, SMS-TAN, or ChipTAN). The transfer is initiated immediately.
Your EUR balance is credited within seconds. Navigate to Buy, select Bitcoin or your chosen cryptocurrency, enter the amount and confirm your purchase.
