Credit and debit card purchases are the fastest way to buy Bitcoin in Germany — funds are credited instantly after 3D Secure authentication. Both Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, including German debit cards that carry the Visa or Mastercard logo.
Card payments are the most universally understood way to buy crypto online. If you've ever bought anything on Amazon or booked a flight, the process is identical: enter your card number, expiry, and CVC, then confirm via your bank's 3D Secure system (such as Sparkasse SecureCode, Verified by Visa, or Mastercard Identity Check).
Both work, but there are important distinctions. German debit cards (EC-Karten / Girocard) do not carry the Visa or Mastercard logo by default and typically cannot be used for online card payments at international exchanges — see our Girocard guide for alternatives. However, many German banks now issue co-branded debit cards: N26 issues Mastercard debit, ING issues Visa debit, Comdirect issues Visa debit, and DKB issues Visa debit. These work perfectly for crypto purchases. Traditional credit cards from Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Postbank, and Sparkasse also work, though your bank may apply a cash advance fee on top of the exchange's processing fee.
All European card transactions over €30 require Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) under the EU's PSD2 regulation. When buying crypto with a card in Germany, you will be redirected to your bank's authentication page and prompted to confirm the transaction via your banking app, SMS code, or a chip-and-PIN device. This is normal, mandatory, and adds an important layer of fraud protection.
Card fees on crypto exchanges typically range from 1.5% to 3.99%. This covers the interchange fee charged by Visa/Mastercard, the payment processor's margin, and the exchange's own markup. CEX.IO charges 2.99%, which is competitive for instant settlement. For larger purchases (€500+), the fee difference between card and SEPA becomes significant — a €1,000 card purchase at 3% costs €30 in fees vs. €0 for SEPA. Consider using SEPA for anything above €200.
Card purchase limits depend on both the exchange and your bank's own card limits. Most exchanges set daily card limits of €5,000–€20,000 for verified accounts. Your bank's card spending limit may be lower — DKB, N26, and ING typically allow you to adjust your daily card limit in the app. Contact your bank if you need to increase limits for a larger crypto purchase.
Create an account on CEX.IO and complete KYC verification with your German ID or passport. Card payments require a fully verified account in most cases.
Go to Finance > Deposit > Credit/Debit Card. Enter your 16-digit card number, expiry date, and 3-digit CVC. The exchange will store your card securely for future use.
Your bank will redirect you to their authentication page. Approve the transaction in your banking app (N26, ING, DKB, Sparkasse etc.) or enter the SMS verification code sent to your registered number.
Once your EUR balance is credited (usually within seconds), navigate to Buy, select Bitcoin or your chosen cryptocurrency, enter your amount and confirm. Your crypto is in your wallet immediately.
